07 Feb Know Your Equipment…Dental Luxators
Having dental equipment is one thing…understanding how it is used is another. The instruments show below aredental luxators. A luxator is a valuable piece of equipment that I use quite frequently when performing extractions. I especially like the Cislak 100C and 1.3S luxators
A luxator does what it says, it luxates the periodontal ligament attachment. It has a very delicate blade (thinner than an elevator) that is used in a light rocking motion, while being pushed apically. It should NEVER be used with any force in a lever or wedge action. This can result in bending or fracturing the working head. (ref: Wiggs R, Lobprise H. Veterinary Dentistry Principles and Practice. Lippincott. Philadelphia. 1997; 13-14)
Know your instruments and use them appropriately. It will make for a smoother dental procedure.
